Making
Your Insurance Pay
This article at Fool.com
seems very a-propos currently with hurricanes
a-visiting. Great advice in there about using
your camera or camcorder to record insurable items
in your house. With a digital camera, this process
is "a breeze" (pardon the pun), so spending
an hour going through all the rooms cataloguing
the items that's important to you may be the best
hour you spend today.

Press Release: EPSON
POWERLITE 821p PROJECTOR
TORONTO, ON August 24, 2004 Picture
a well-lit room or environment where colourful
presentations and detailed digital images need
to be projected clearly on a screen or wall from
a variety of distances. Add to that challenge
a business or school in need of a portable projector
that is not only quick and easy to set up using
several video sources, but also adds the values
of extremely quiet fan noise, yet loud and clear
audio capabilities. Although this may sound like
an AV dilemma that is impossible to solve with
just one product, the new EPSON PowerLite 821p
is an ideal solution.
The EPSON PowerLite 821p is priced at CAD$4,299.99
with a 2,000-hour replaceable bulb priced at CAD$299,
and will be available through authorized pro audio/visual,
national distribution, catalog and direct PC dealers
throughout the country this September.

Fujifilm
FinePix S7000 Zoom Review
I
had so much fun with the Fujifilm FinePix S7000
Zoom digital camera that I almost forgot
to do the review! It's ergonomic, intuitive, and
has one of the best EVF (large viewfinder, easy
on the eyes, clear and sharp). I found it point-and-shoot
simple to use, with full exposure flexibility.
It has 6.3 MP, 6x optical zoom, a powerful flash,
manual zoom/focus ring, and super macro at 1 cm.
The FinePix S7000 has dual memory card slots (for

Mini Tutorials: NOW
YOU KNOW Series
As many of our readers are beginning to realize,
Photoxels is not so much a digital camera
review site as it is a site about digital photography.
Even though we continue to receive praise from
you about our to-the-point, clear and concise
reviews, we receive even more mail from you about
how we have helped you understand digital photography
concepts. After all, in a couple of years, digital
cameras are going to become as common as apple
pies (and croissants, fish and chips, sauerkrauts,
samosas, pho, and niuk nian) -- and for most of
us, the only criteria will be, "Silver or
Black?"
We will continue to bring you reviews of some
of the best digital cameras available on the market,
but also concentrate more on easy-to-understand
tutorials. What's the point of having an expensive
digital camera if you can't take good pictures
with it?
Many of you have noticed that taking pictures
in Auto mode with a P&S is not quite the same
as taking pictures in Auto mode with an expensive
prosumer model or dSLR. <<Ah bien oui, Monsieur,
there is a difference between driving a
Toyota Tercel in automatic gear shift mode and
driving a Mack tractor trailer truck in automatic
gear shift mode. Though they are both in automatic
gear shift mode, they respond differently when
you press Le Gas Pedal.>>
Therefore, in a new NOW YOU KNOW series,
we explain how you can become a better photographer
in bite-size mini tutorials. Our
goal is to slowly -- and, hopefully, painlessly
-- wean you away from the Auto mode so you can
explore digital photography to the fullest. [

Don't Try This At Home: Infrared
Photography With The Canon G1
"I discovered infrared photography in
2001 when I added a Hoya R72 infrared filter to
the Lensmate adapter on my Canon G1, put the camera
on a tripod and pressed the shutter. I've looked
at the world differently ever since." So
writes Don Ellis (featured twice on our
Featured Sites
section) about discovering the seemingly magical
world of infrared photography. There was only
one problem: the G1 has an internal infrared cut
filter, and this means extremely slow shutter
speeds (the infrared filter cuts off infrared
light, which we are using to expose the image
sensor). From our "Don't try this at home
unless you know what you're doing, folks"
department, Don has reproduced a tutorial from
Tony Kaplan on how to replace the G1's
infrared cut filter with clear glass, thus allowing
the use of normal shutter speeds. Warning:
This ain't for the faint of heart, or if a small
scratch on your digital camera sends you into
a dizzy, and besides you'll surely invalidate
any warranty you may still have.... [ I
can take it, I want to see the internals of a
digital camera as long as it's not mine, send
me to Don's site... ]

One way we know you are reading our tutorials
is when you take time to send us nice thank you
notes. Another equally useful feedback is when
you write back to set us straight, as did Steven

that sounds correct enough -- except that it isn't.
Nothing beats learning from one another. Thanks,
