The affordable digital SLR category is heating
up with the introduction of the Konica Minolta
Maxxum 7D / Dynax 7D.
The Konica Minolta 7D features 6.1-megapixel
resolution on an APS-sized (23.7 x 15.6 mm) CCD
image sensor. Its main differentiator from its
competitors is Konica Minolta's unique Anti-Shake
system first pioneered in the DiMAGE A1. Instead
of shifting a lens (thus requiring you to purchase
expensive Image Stabilized lenses), the Anti-Shake
technology precisely shifts the CCD to compensate
for camera movement on both the vertical and horizontal
axis, thus providing effective camera-shake protection
with a wide range of telephoto, wide-angle, macro
and standard lenses.
The large 2.5-in. LCD monitor (with 207,000 pixels)
makes image reviewing easy. The optical viewfinder
uses a glass pentaprism and a spherical acute
matte focusing screen (with 0.9x magnification)
for bright and easy framing.
The Konica Minolta 7D uses MAXXUM SLR series
controls for intuitive operation. As expected,
the Minolta 7D provides full exposure flexibility
with a 9-point AF system and a choice of 14-segment
honeycomb-pattern, center-weighted average or
spot metering modes; instant switch from auto
to manual focusing; a high-capacity buffer memory;
high-speed continuous shooting of up to 9 frames
(at a speed of 3 fps) in RAW and RAW+JPEG (15
frames at JPEG, L-FINE); an AF Illuminator (using
the built-in flash) for low-light focusing; and
hi-speed USB 2.0 connectivity.
A wide variety of optional accessories is available:
those who take lots of vertically oriented shots
will appreciate the availability of an optional
vertical control grip; external flashes, including
macro ring flash; and, off-camera flash accessories.
Two new lenses introduced specially for the Konica
Minolta 7D are: a wide-angle zoom AF 17 - 35mm
f/2.8 - 4(D); and a zoom AF 28 - 75mm f/2.8(D)
with f/2.8 aperture at any focal length. A large
number of existing Konica Minolta film SLR lenses
using the Minolta A-type bayonet mount are also
compatible.
[Note that, because the image sensor is APS-sized
instead of full-frame, the actual focal length
is roughly 1.5 times longer than those stated.]
Advanced amateur and prosumer photographers who
desire a quality and professional digital SLR
at an affordable price will want to include the
Konica Minolta Maxxum 7D / Dynax 7D on
their shortlist of candidates.
