The Leica X1
is a compact digital camera with a large APS-C size image sensor -- the camera enthusiasts have been waiting for. The Leica X1 has leapfrogged all its competitors in one bound, and redefines the standard by which all compact digital cameras will be judged against.
In look and feel, the Leica X1 is distinctly
a Leica M design, with an all-metal construction and high-quality leather trim. It has a f/2.8 36mm (equiv.) fixed focal length lens that is not interchangeable.
There is no built-in viewfinder. An optional optical viewfinder can be slotted into the hot shoe. A LED on the viewfinder indicates AF has locked successfully. There is also an optional handgrip that screws into the tripod socket.
The LCD monitor is 2.7-in. with 230K dots resolution.
PASM modes mean the photographer can let the camera decide the exposure settings or take full control. AF is Contrast Detect; manual focusing is possible. On top of the camera, there is the obligatory shutter speed dial; as well, there is a smaller aperture dial just behind the shutter release button.
There is a pop-up flash that can be used for fill-in flash.
An ISO range from 100-3200, the large APS-C sensor, and the fast lens all combine to make available light photography possible.
The Leica X1 has ushered in the new age of digital cameras. At last, consumers can start looking forward to more compact digital cameras with large image sensors that will allow them to take photography when and where they like -- with image quality that up to now could only be obtained by using a DSLR.
