S Magazine is unique in that it allows professional photographers to share inspiration and contemporary photographic ideas. The publication includes editorial portfolios and current advertising campaigns by prominent international photographers as well as information on the latest trends in commercial photography. Nine spreads in the issue were shot by Rankin using the complete Leica S-System. Within each collection of images, Rankin collaborated with a top hair stylist who led the art direction with diverse subject matter ranging from “The Glow” to “Antithesis.” Featured hair stylists include Alain Pichon, Wendy Iles, Kenna, Raphaël Salley, Tina Outen, Nick Irwin, Kevin Ford, Charlie Le Mindu and Johnnie Sapong.

“These guys are at the top of their game – really talented. It’s very unusual for a hair stylist to get the opportunity to express themselves that directly, with that much freedom,” explains Rankin. The resulting images produce nine striking and very diverse fashion stories. For the Londoner, this hair project represents the fulfillment of a long-standing ambition.

With a career spanning over two decades, Rankin’s subjects have included Britney Spears, Kate Moss, Kylie Minogue, Spice Girls, Madonna, David Bowie, Björk, Juliette Binoche, Lily Allen, Kevin Spacey, The Rolling Stones, Vivienne Westwood, Cate Blanchett, Queen Elizabeth II and Tony Blair. Furthermore, Rankin has shot world-renowned campaigns for Nike, Umbro, Reebok, Rimmel, L’Oreal, Hugo Boss, Levi’s, Shiatzy Chen, Thomas Wylde, Aussi, Madonna for H&M, Dove, BMW and Coca Cola, among others. Additional projects have included a one hour documentary titled “Seven Photographs that Changed Fashion” which aired on BBC 4 and commercial television advertisements with Chris Cottam, including the Dove range of products and Rimmel cosmetics.

Rankin’s tool of choice, the Leica S, was introduced at this year’s photokina trade show in Cologne, Germany and incorporates increased speed, imaging quality and sensor sensitivity. The decisive advantage of the 37.5 MP Leica S lies in the sum of all its features: flexibility, durability and easy operation combined with industry-leading resolution and image quality. The addition of geotagging capabilities combined with compact size and outstanding mobility make the Leica S ideal for any shooting situation whether in studio or on location.

In addition to the print version of S-Magazine, the S-Magazine application provides yet another platform for photographers to present work shot with the Leica S-System to a broad international audience. This iPad application is available through iTunes and perfectly supplements the physical magazine as well as www.S-League.net, Leica Camera’s online portal for S Photographers.
