The Nikon Coolpix 8800 improves dramatically
upon the Nikon 8700 that it is replacing with
a 10x optical zoom (35-350mm, 35 mm equivalent)
with Vibration Reduction Technology (Nikon speak
for "image stabilization"). This is
the highest zoom of the 8MP prosumer models.
In a slightly larger body than the Nikon 8700
(but still much more compact than most of the
8MP prosumer models), the Nikon 8800 also adds
a more powerful battery, an AF-Assist Illuminator
(on the body instead of the pop-up flash), a more
rounded and pleasant looking design, and controls
slightly re-arranged for more intuitive use.
Since we have not yet reviewed the Nikon Coolpix
8800, we cannot consider it for our Editor's
Choice, but would encourage you to include it
in your shortlist for it has all the hallmarks
of being a real winner.
