Review Date: Feb 27, 2007

Fujifilm FinePix S9100

Category: Prosumer - Advanced Amateur

The Fujifilm FinePix S9100 [S9600 outside North America] replaces the FinePix S9000 with the new 6th Generation SuperCCD HR image sensor with low noise at high ISO capabilities. It has a new 28-300mm (35mm equivalent) 10.7x wide-angle optical zoom with manual twist-barrel zoom control that should delight many serious photographers desiring a wide-angle coverage without sacrificing a worthy telephoto coverage.

Improvements according to Fuji has to do with improved image quality [sharpness and resolution], faster response [AF 40% quicker, 0.8 sec. startup time, 0.01 sec. shutter-lag] and intelligent flash.

A new i-Flash Intelligent Flash works in tandem with high sensitivity settings to preserve natural skin tones. If you are not sure whether to use flash in a particular situation, an original Dual Shot Mode will take 2 pictures, one with flash and the other without.

The Fujifilm S9100 has 9.0 megapixels resolution with a F2.8 to F11 aperture range, and shutter speed ranges from 30 sec. to a blazing fast 1/4,000 sec. in Manual mode, plus Bulb. It has the same high resolution EVF (electronic viewfinder) at 235,000 pixels. The tiltable LCD monitor is now 2.0-in. and permits flexible shooting at awkward high or low angles. It keeps the dual media slots for xD-Picture Card as well as CF/IBM MicroDrive. Other professional options include a manual focus / zooming adjustment lens ring, a hot shoe mount, and the full range of exposure flexibility.

It continues to support CCD-RAW and JPEG file formats and connects to a computer via USB 2.0 High Speed. Another nod toward popular request is the use of 4 AA alkaline batteries as its power source. A live histogram can be displayed during Recording mode.

The Fujifilm FinePix S9100 updates the popular S9000 with expanded low-light capability.
