Fujifilm FinePix E550 Review

Review Date: Jan 3, 2005

Category: Serious Amateur

This Fujifilm FinePix E550 Review is based on a production model. All sample images are unretouched, except where specified.

Mall Santa
28.8mm, Programmed Auto, Spot, 1/5.3 sec., F5.6 and ISO 80

The Fujifilm FinePix E550 Zoom is one of the new generation of digital cameras that is addressing most of the complaints leveled against consumer digital cameras.

With 4x optical zoom, 6.3MP resolution and full exposure flexibility, the Fujifilm E550 provides good image quality. And first for a Fujifilm consumer digital camera, noise is low at ISO 80 and ISO 100. Fujifilm has even provided a high ISO 800, though at a lower 3MP resolution, with noise level that is acceptable when it's a matter of taking the picture or nothing.

Finally, the Fujifilm E550 is f-a-s-t! If you miss a candid shot, it won't be because of this camera: the lens extends in about 1 sec. and the LCD displays in about 0.5 sec. more; shutter lag is negligible for all practical purposes; and shot-to-shot is about 1 sec., except for flash pictures when it takes about 3 sec. to recharge the flash.

The Fujifilm FinePix E550 is targeted to beginner and serious amateur photographers, priced affordably as such, and full-featured for those wishing to experiment and learn. If you are looking for a wide-angle lens (slightly more wide-angle than the standard 35mm), then check out the E550.
