[September 11, 2002]
Welcome to the first issue of Photoxels! For
our first edition, we are pretty humble about
it. It's taken a lot of time and work to put this
edition together and we have launched three weeks
ahead of schedule. If any of you surfed to here
before Sep 11, 2002, you would have seen this.
Those who know how to view the source behind it
would have also noticed the hidden message: Coming
October 1, 2002! Well, we in fact launched on
Sep 11, 2002, on the very day of the World Trade
Center anniversary. The site was ready and we
decided that a launch on that day would be symbolic:
a new birth, though small, humble and seemingly
insignificant, would be our contribution on that
memorial day.
Why Another Digital Camera Site?
We started Photoxels because, first of all, we
are a group of photography enthusiasts -- not
professionals by any means, though we like to
think of ourselves as serious amateur photographers
-- who also happen to hold full-time jobs. What
this means is that we find it impossible to keep
abreast of the best and latest digital cameras
coming out in the market. Though there are excellent
sites out there which
review digital cameras in meticulous details,
we find that our busy schedule prevent us from
spending the enormous amount of time required
to read and process all that information. We didn't
have time reading a complete rehash of the manufacturers'
brochures, or a description of every single control
on a camera. We wanted to look at a number of
cameras and get to their key facts quick, and
so came up with the QuickFact
Sheets.
QuickFact
Sheets
At this point of our development, all we can offer
our readers are summaries of the important features
of the best digital cameras out there. Of course,
you can get all this info directly from the manufacturers'
respective sites, but then you would have to surf
to dozen of different sites to do that. It would
be a major investment of time and effort. Instead,
we have conveniently brought all that information
for you into one section on Photoxels: Digital
Cameras. Here, you can browse at your leisure
all the latest digital cameras. Once you have
narrowed down your choice of those cameras that
most interest you, your shortlist so to speak,
then you can click and link to the manufacturers'
sites to obtain all the details you need. We believe
that you will find this to be an enormous time
saver.
Our fact sheets are just that: facts sheets,
not reviews. At this point, we leave reviews to
other sites more geared toward this aspect. To
help you, we have provided a link to some of the
review sites
available.
Favorite Models
We also do not cover all digital cameras. In fact,
we are of the opinion that, to meet the standards
we have set for ourselves on this site, for acceptable
results (whether for online display or prints),
digital cameras need a resolution of 3 megapixels
or more. So digital cameras with less resolution
are not covered. It does not mean that they are
not good or you should not consider buying them.
It's all about choices. In fact, sometimes, we
will cover one that we think is news worthy. Feel
free to consider digital cameras with less than
3 megapixels resolution if the quality of the
pictures they produce are enough for your needs.
It's just that there are so many models out there
and we cannot cover all of them, so we have to
draw the line somewhere. As the resolution offered
by camera manufacturers continue to increase,
we might in fact decide to up the bar higher and
start covering only digital cameras with 4 megapixels
resolution and higher in the future. Out of those
digital cameras that have resolution of 3 megapixels
and higher, we further restrict the list by letting
our editors choose their favorite models.
Editors' Personal Bias
As you read through our coverage of the different
digital cameras, you will notice that the editors
have personal bias. You might agree or disagree
with them freely. By no means should you take
their word as gospel. Very often, it is the small
things that tilt one in favor of one camera and
not the other. We are complex beings who are driven
by different needs, wants and stimulii. Take it
all with a grain of salt and a pinch each of parsley,
sage, rosemary and thyme.
How You Can Help Us
We welcome your feedback to make this a better
site. Remember, we all do this in our spare time,
so updates can take some time and we cannot guarantee
that we can personally respond to every email.
We do promise to read each one of them and thank
you all in advance for your comments and suggestions.
In fact, we have already received comments and
are working on incorporating them in our site.
One immediate change you'll see is that we have
dropped all affiliate ads on this site. We do
not favor one camera over another because of company
sponsorship. At the risk of repeating ourselves,
the opinions expressed on this site are our own.
Our desire is to evolve this site into something
unique and helpful to you. The ideas abound in
our head, but time is scarce. We have no doubt
that we will reinvent ourselves a number of times,
so come back often.
Thank you for reading and writing!
