Review: Fujifilm Instax Mini 90 “Neo Classic” Is All Fun

Mon December 30, 2013

If “instant photography” to you means taking a picture and have it reviewed instantly on the LCD monitor, transferred instantly to your computer or tablet, uploaded instantly to your social site and/or printed instantly on your printer — then you have never heard of print instant cameras.

There was a time when “instant photography” meant that you could take a film picture and it would develop right before your eyes in about one minute. You would then hold a print in your hand. Studio photographers loved instant cameras because it gave them an immediate feedback of whether their composition worked.

Of course, today, with the picture appearing right away on the LCD monitor or tablet, an actual print is not necessary anymore. And so, the print instant cameras went into the history dustbin.

Not quite.

Polaroid pioneered the print instant cameras and now Fujifilm has continued manufacturing instant print cameras. Is there a need for such cameras anymore in the digital age?

I recently played with a Fujifilm Instax Mini 90 camera. It is also called the “Neo Classic,” a referral to its stylish two-tone “retro” look. It has more modes than print instant cameras usually have and the retractable lens means that you can actually carry the camera in a large coat pocket. With the lens retracted, camera dimensions and weight are 113.4 (H) x 91.9 (W) x 57.2 mm (D), 294g (4.46” x 3.62” x 2.25”, 0.65 lbs) (excluding the battery, strap and film). A shoulder strap is also included.

Fuji X-E2 Review @ Neocamera

Tue December 17, 2013 | by Itai Danan

The Fuji X-E2 is the most advanced mirrorless by Fuji. It uses the same unique 16 megapixels X-Trans CMOS II sensor as the fixed-lens Fuji X100S and matches it with a Fuji X-mount which gives access to a growing lineup of Fujinon lenses. As a high-end offering, this mirrorless offers a built-in EVF with 2.4 megapixels and a built-in Eye-Start sensor. The EXR II processor in the X-E2 captures images continuously at up to 7 FPS and full 1080p HD video at 60 FPS.

Fuji X-E2 Review

fuji_xe2_review

The Fuji X-E2 promised to deliver full-frame image-quality with its special 6×6 X-Trans color-filter array which is not prone to moire and therefore does not need an anti-alias filter. It also claims to match the autofocus speed of high-end DSLRs with a new hybrid autofocus system which combined Contrast-Detect and Phase-Detect on-sensor.

To find out how it performs and if it lives up to expectations, read the detailed Fuji X-E2 review here.

Ricoh Pentax K-3 Review @ Neocamera

Wed November 27, 2013 | by Itai Danan

Pentax K-3 Review

The Pentax K-3 a professional DSLR which boasts a 24 megapixels CMOS sensor mounted on an incredibly versatile Shake-Reduction mechanism. This serves to stabilize all images, correct unintentional camera tilt, tilt-and-shift the view, clean the sensor and now – unique to the K-3 – simulate an anti-alias filter. The K-3 uses a high-speed processor to shoot continuously at 8.3 FPS and a new 27-point SAFOX XI autofocus system with tracking features.

Pentax K-3 Review

An extensive review of the Pentax K-3 just got published at Neocamera. Of particular interest to existing Pentax owners, this review covers in great details changes between the K-5 IIs and K-3, the first DSLR sold under the Ricoh brand. While the brand has changed, the K-3 clearly shows its Pentax DNA and retains nearly every functions of previous generations.

Image-quality of this DSLR can be seen in the gallery of full-resolution images published with the Pentax K-3 review. Check them out and be sure not to miss the anti-alias simulator demo and comparisons between the K-3 and both the Pentax K-5 IIs and Nikon D610 to see how state of the art APS-C and full-frame sensors compare.

Olympus OM-D E-M1 Field Report @ Luminous Landscape

Sun September 22, 2013

Michael Reichmann of Luminous Landscape took a pre-production E-M1 during a week’s trip to Paris, France and has completed his rolling field report. His conclusion is telling and a harbinger of what APS-C (mirrorless and traditional mirrored DSLR) cameras can expect to be facing in the future when pitted against the Micro Four Thirds (mFT) mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras. The mFT standard is a good one, offering users the freedom to mix and match cameras and lenses and not get tied down to one system only. Let’s hope that more camera manufacturers will see the light and join this standard.

The MFT advantage used to be smaller cameras and smaller and lighter lenses. Now the body size advantage has been challenged, but the lens size advantage remains, and always will, MFT used to mean some compromises when it came to image quality, but those days are past. Only the most neurotic pixel peeper will find anything to kvetch about with files from the Olympus E-M1 and its contemporaries.

Read the Olympus OM-D E-M1 Field Report at Luminous Landscape.
