How Did the iPad Head Girl Get About Without Knocking Into Things and People?

Thu August 11, 2011

From ipadheadgirl

You’ve seen the iPad Head Girl commercial and it’s a bit strange, to say the least. It’s a promo from CFG (Cosmo For Guys) to advertise their iPad app.

The cool thing about the whole thing, in my opinion, is how the girl oriented herself without stumbling about, knocking into things and people. Did she wear an earpiece with audio instructions where to go, how many steps to the right, etc? Turns out, they used a pretty cool technology: she wore a pair of video glasses connected to a video camera hidden inside her purse! It gave her a point of view lower than she’s used to but a clear view nonetheless of what lay ahead.

Now if we can have those eyeglasses made more ordinary-looking and connected wirelessly to tiny cameras worn around, say, my collar, I could, with just the appropriate tilt of the head direct which camera feeds its view to my glasses. If you see that in some spy movie, you heard about it here first. :D

How To Shoot Right Through Frosted Glass Using Scotch Tape

Wed August 10, 2011

From TheFarmacyMa

I’m sure there is a good scientific explanation behind: you can get a clear view right through frosted glass using a piece of scotch tape. Yep, the very same scotch tape on your office desk. Incredible! So, I guess the frosted glass windows beside your house door won’t give much privacy anymore. Perhaps, it’s time to buy some shutters?

PhotoGraphy Uses Pinhole Camera To Decorate Vases

Fri August 5, 2011

PhotoGraphy from ShiKai Tseng on Vimeo.

The idea is as simple as it is brillant: coat a vase (or other three-dimensional object) with photo-sensitive solution and expose them inside a special pinhole camera (special because it has more than one pinholes). After exposure to a scene, the vases are then developed in a darkroom like a normal photograph.

“PhotoGraphy” is the creation of a process in which the environment, time and light react to each other and generate images on three-dimensional objects. The objects are coated with a “light-sensitive” layer, put in a black box with strategically placed holes, and exposed for 5 to 50 minutes depending on the brightness of the environment. It is a new way to capture a moment in time, no matter whether the image on the object is focused or losing focus – the object will carry the trace of its first moments of experience, its first exposure.

Gulp Behind The Scenes

Fri August 5, 2011

Gulp. The world’s largest stop-motion animation shot on a Nokia N8. from Nokia HD on Vimeo.

The iPhone has a great camera. So does almost any other smartphone camera these days. Take, for example, the Nokia N8 which has a 12MP camera and used here to shoot “Gulp,” a short film created by Sumo Science at Aardman, depicting a fisherman going about his daily catch. The stop-motion video was shot on location at Pendine Beach in South Wales. The film has broken a world record for the “largest stop-motion animation set,” with the largest scene stretching over 11,000 square feet.

Carlin Glynn and Peter Masterson Donate “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” to UT Austin

Thu August 4, 2011

Husband-wife duo actress Carlin Glynn and writer and director Peter Masterson have decided to donate a collection of materials relating to their careers and their work on the original Broadway production and film of “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” to the Harry Ransom Center, a humanities research library and museum at The University of Texas at Austin.

The musical was directed by Masterson while Carol Hall wrote the lyrics. The stage musical starred Glynn as Mona Stangley, the owner of a brothel in the fictional town of Gilbert, Texas. The show was a huge hit. It ran for more than 1,500 performances on Broadway, toured extensively and was adapted to film in 1982.

Glynn won a Tony Award for her performance in the Broadway production, and the show was nominated for best musical, best book of a musical, best direction and best choreography.
