He makes works of art on sandy beaches, by hand, using a stick or leaf broom, with the latter sometimes tied and dragged behind his bicycle (or pickup truck). As the video shows, he walks, draws a circle, walks some more, draws another circle, and on and on until the drawing is complete. There must easily be about 100 circles in that drawing. Now if you’ve ever tried drawing a circle freehand, you know how difficut it can be to get it as perfectly round as possible.

He has to finish his sand drawings before the high tide comes in and washes them all away. Do you remember being upset when someone messed up your drawing in elementary school?

American artist Alexa Meade probably had an epiphany when she then set out to bring her latest art project to life. Or, should we say, bring life to art?

Here’s the scoop:

take a live model

dab him or her thoroughly in acrylic paint so s/he looks like a painting

take a photo of the live model imitiating a painting

sell the photo as art

No one told her that she was supposed to paint the bloke on a canvas? One step versus 4 steps?

Then, of course, she could have stopped at #2 and sold the live model as a painting. Sitting on a deck chair for life in shorts and t-shirt ain’t too bad if a meal, HD TV and an XBox were thrown into the mix.

Check out more of her work at: Alexa Meade and Flickr.

All the lonely people
Where do they all come from
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong
- Eleanor Rigby by the Beatles

At any one time, there are people moving all over the face of this planet. We are not talking here of travel for business or pleasure, but of migration. Where do the people immigrating to the USA or Canada come from? You’d be surprised by the answer of who’s coming in from where and who’s leaving to where.

On the interactive graphic, click a country on the left side to see where people are leaving from that country to what other countries. Click on a country on the right side to see which countries are supplying the immigrants to that country.

For example, in the following graphic, I selected USA on the right side to display where people immigrating to the USA come from.

It’s lots of fun and mildly addictive. Give it a try!

I’ve been noticing a lot lately that whenever the main actors in a movie enter a major room, the perspective suddenly changes from “on the ground” to “from the ceiling.” For a few seconds, the view from the ceiling showing the actors striding purposefully into the room makes for a dramatic scene.

Skott Chandler takes the same high road, placing his pinhole cameras on the ceiling, looking on the view straight down, casting “an unflinching gaze upon the inhabitants and rooms within the walls; not to judge, but to witness.” While not as dramatic a statement as in a movie, the resulting photograph is nevertheless quite revealing and the original perspective is definitely refreshing.
