Canon PowerShot S500 Digital Elph

Review Date: April 1, 2004

Canon PowerShot S500 / S410 Digital ELPH

Category: Point-and-Shoot

The Canon PowerShot S500 Digital ELPH (aka Digital IXUS 500 in UK) does not claim to be the smallest ultra compact digital camera around, but it is stunningly beautiful. It is compact enough to slip into a small purse, and light enough to carry all day in the front pocket of your trousers. Cachet, class, elegance and style are words that aptly describe it.

The Canon S500 features 5.0 megapixels resolution (the S410 has 4.0 megapixels). They both have 3x optical zoom, a maximum aperture of F2.8, and a shutter speed range of 15-1/2,000 sec.

A new dedicated Print & Share button enables direct printing from a Canon Card Photo or Direct Photo Printer. Compliance with PictBridge industry standard lets you print directly to any brand PictBridge-compliant printer.

An optional Waterproof Case WP-DC800 allows you to take the camera underwater up to 130 feet.

We like the Canon PowerShot S500 Digital ELPH because of its compact JeansPocket™ Certified size, 5.0 megapixels resolution, focus-assist lamp to permit precise autofocus even in dim situations, and ease of use -- which makes it the perfect point-and-shoot digital camera to take anywhere.
