Canon Photo Printers: Canon Card Photo Printer CP-200

The Canon Card Photo Printer CP-200 is ready to go right out of the box. Measuring only 170.0W x 119.0D x 54.8H mm / 6.7W x 4.7D x 2.2H in. and weighing 820g / 28.9 oz., the CP-200 can be easily carried in a business attache case, gym bag, or backpack. Since it is PictBridge-compatible, you can connect any PictBridge-compatible digital camera (of any brand) to it and print directly without going through a computer. Which means you can now print your pictures wherever you want to. I can easily think of a few cases:

The CP-200 uses dye sublimation to print high-quality 300 dpi 4x6 in. photos, credit card size photos or sticky photo labels. You can print them bordered or borderless, with each 4x6 in. photo taking about 85 seconds to print. The photo prints in four passes with one colour deposited on each pass (Yellow, Magenta and Cyan), followed by a protective overcoating. You can even create your own postcards; in fact, the paper that comes with the printer is really a postcard, with space to write an address and message at the back.

Since you can print directly without going through a computer, there is nothing to install! Well, that is if you always print directly from your digital camera, which I can't see this happening. Perhaps the first time when you have just taken the pictures, you'll print directly from the camera; after that, you will most probably transfer the images from the memory card to your PC, and print from your PC. To do that, simply install the supplied printer software. The popular ZoomBrowser EX and Photo Record software also come standard for Windows, and ImageBrowser for the Mac.

I directly printed a dozen or so of 4x6 in. borderless prints using images that I took with the 4MP Canon PowerShot SD10 Digital ELPH digital camera, and they came out looking great.

In case you forget, printers do not usually come with a printer cable (to connect to your computer), so remember to order one with your printer. With the Canon CP-200, I was able to reuse my current printer USB cable.

The Canon Card Photo Printer CP-200 (and its cousin CP-300 which comes with a rechargeable battery for ultimate carry anywhere convenience) is fun and easy to use. It is compact, sleek and look modern in design. Take it with you anywhere you can plug in the power cord and, together with a PictBridge-compatible digital camera, you'll have the modern equivalent of the instant camera.
