The Canon PowerShot SD700 IS is Canon's
first Digital ELPH equipped with image stabilization,
which helps reduce camera shake and blurred images.
Following the "Perpetual Curve" design
first seen in the SD500, the Canon SD700 is beautifully
and solidly built with an essentially silver body
and chrome accents around the F2.8-5.5 lens, plus
a practical black surface surrounding the extra
large 2.5-in. LCD monitor. Its ultracompact dimensions
earn it our JeansPocket
Certified award, which means you can comfortably
carry it in your jeans pocket.
This camera is targeted to Point-and-Shoot photographers
with 6.0MP resolution (which is more than plenty
for producing very large prints), and a 4x optical
zoom (where most of its competitors stop at 3x).
AUTO and 9 Scene Modes (plus 2 Color Effects)
simplify shooting, but more advanced photographers
can also switch to the Manual (M) mode (essentially
a Programmed Auto mode with manual long shutter
speeds (up to 15 sec.) for more control. In fact,
M mode also provides control over ISO (ISO 80
to 800, plus "HI"), WB (including Custom
WB), exposure compensation, light metering and
a couple of cool Image Effects.
The extra large 2.5-in. LCD monitor has a good
173,000 pixels resolution which, together with
a fast refresh rate, makes for a clear and smooth
display (a bit choppy in low light). The LCD monitor
gains up well in low-light to permit easier composition.
There is also a small real-image zoom optical
viewfinder.
Startup and shot to shot times are fast at about
1 sec., and there is no practical shutter lag.
AF is precise and fast, with an effective AF-assist
Illuminator to help achieve focus lock in low-light.
Image quality is very good to excellent and ISO
80 and 100 produce virtually noise-free images.
Chromatic Aberration is not a problem in everyday
shots. A histogram can be displayed in Playback.
Standard movies can record 640x480 pixels at
30fps in 1GB clips until the memory card is full
(when using a super high-speed memory card).
As far as optional accessories go, the Canon
SD700 IS has an external High-Power Flash and
an underwater marine case for those who fancy
underwater photography.
The Canon PowerShot SD700 IS is stylish
and easy to use, and produces very good to excellent
image quality. The addition of optical image stabilizer
technology makes it a perfect easy-to-use take-anywhere
ultra compact digital camera.
