The Canon PowerShot G7 goes for the nostalgic
look with a redesign that does away with the handgrip
for a more compact and flush body. In fact, the
new 6x optical zoom lens retracts into the body
and has its own lens cover when closed. New is
Image Stabilization technology that provides approx.
3 stops gain to reduce the effect of camera shake.
The redesign introduces a rotary-type Control
Dial (like on the S80) and an ISO Speed Dial for
more intuitive analog-type operations. The Canon
G7 features 10.0 megapixels resolution and full
exposure flexibility.
A few losses should be noted: whereas the max.
aperture on the G6 was F2.0, the G7 opens up only
to F2.8, plus the G7 does not support RAW file
format. The following table summarizes the "losses"
that were particularly prized in the G6 by advanced
photographers but absent in the G7:

New is Face Detect technology together with Face
Priority AE. The AF Frame is movable across the
screen to permit off-center focusing. A histogram
can be displayed in Playback. There is a flash
hot shoe and the G7 accepts optional lenses.
Even though the Canon PowerShot G7 features
Scene Modes, it is strictly targeted to serious
amateur photographers who desire total control
over the features of their camera and know how
to make the most of the manual controls. If you
do not fancy a DSLR, the exposure flexibility
and excellent image quality of the G7 deserve
a look.
