The Canon PowerShot G1 X features a large 1.5-in. 14.3MP CMOS image sensor, which is the largest sensor to date for a Canon point-and-shoot model. This sensor is just slightly larger than the one used in the mirrorless Four Thirds camera but smaller than APS-C. We’re not sure if this 1.5-in. sensor signals that 1) Canon is NOT going to introduce a mirrorless camera, 2) Canon intends to compete with the mirrorless with its new G series with large sensor, and/or 3) when Canon does introduce its mirrorless, it will sport this 1.5-in. sensor.
The G1 X features a 3.0-in. (922k-dot) Vari-angle LCD, Full HD Movie 1920 x 1080 @ 24fps with stereo sound, RAW (14-bit), an optical viewfinder and control dials. In addition, it features Shutter Speed range of 1/4,000 – 60 sec., Continuous Shooting of 4.5fps, PASM, Scene Modes, ISO 100-12800, hot shoe, built-in Neutral Density Filter, and built-in Flash. Specs-wise, the G1 X certainly competes with the compact mirrorless except that it does not permit interchangeable lenses, providing instead a fixed 4x optical zoom lens (28-112mm, equiv.).
The Canon PowerShot G1 X targets enthusiasts who desire a high quality point-and-shoot camera with DSLR-level image quality.
