Samsung NX100

The Samsung NX100 joins the compact Digital Interchangeable Lens (“compact mirrorless”) camera category sporting a new i-Function Lens that allows you to select exposure settings using the lens’ focus ring. Features include a 14.6MP APS-C CMOS (23.4×15.6 mm) sensor, a 7.6-cm (3.0-in.) AMOLED display (614k-dot), HD 720p 1280×720 Movie. A 20-50mm (30.8-77mm equiv.) F3.5-5.6 2.5x optical zoom kit lens is included.

Samsung is definitely going head to head with the Panasonic GF1, Olympus E-P2 and Olympus E-PL1. With Nikon and Canon missing in this race so far, Samsung believes it has a chance to catch up and even dominate in this red-hot category by using an APS-C CMOS sensor which is larger than the FourThirds sensor used in the Panasonic and Olympus models.

There is no built-in viewfinder, but an optional electronic viewfinder (EVF) can be purchased and slotted into the hot shoe. There is also an optional GPS unit for those who wish to preserve a record of where each picture was taken. Note that since there is only one hot shoe, you can use either an external flash, the EVF or GPS unit at any one time.

The 20-50mm (30.8-77mm equiv.) 2.5x optical zoom kit lens that is included with the camera is not image stabilized. You can also get a 20mm (30.8mm equiv.) F2.8 pancake lens which might be a better option if you do a lot of street photography and want your camera to be as compact and discreete as possible. Samsung plans to introduce more lenses: 60mm Macro lens, 18-200mm Super Zoom lens, 16mm, 85mm, and 16-80mm.

Other features advanced photographers will appreciate: RAW file support, PASM shooting modes (with full shutter speed range available), manual zoom ring, manual focus ring (fly-by-wire), and a beautiful 3.0-in. AMOLED screen that provides a higher contrast than LCD and allows for easier viewing in direct sunlight.

The Samsung NX100 is available in black or brown (or white in certain countries), and is priced at about US $ (CAD $).
