The Nikon D7000 DSLR once again sets the bar for the serious Digital SLR camera with superb low-light capability. It is everything a serious photographer could ask from a DSLR and, though it is supposed to be the replacement for the D90, its feature set comes closest to the semi-pro D300s. It features 16.2MP resolution (APS-C CMOS), a pentaprism optical viewfinder with 100% frame coverage, continuous shooting at 6fps for up to 100 images, Full HD movie with full-time AF, twin SD card slots, mirror lock-up, 3.0-inch LCD (921k-dot), and a dust and moisture sealed body with magnesium alloy top and rear covers.
For those waiting to upgrade their D90, the wait is over. The D7000 is not only much better than the D90, but those with a D300s may also consider upgrading to a D7000. Compared to the D300s, the D7000 not only matches its features but sports a higher resolution, greater ISO range (ISO 100-6400), full HD 1080p movie with full-time AF, improved and faster Live View AF.
Nikon has opted for Lens-shift (Optical) Image Stabilization (I.S.) in their DSLR cameras. This means that there is no built-in I.S. in the camera body and it is up to you to purchase a lens with or without I.S. The 18-105mm kit lens has image stabilization (Nikon calls it Vibration Reduction, or VR for short). As the D7000 accepts interchangeable lenses, you have an incredible number of NIKKOR lenses to choose from for every conceivable purpose. The D7000 supports auto focus with older Nikon AF and AF-D lenses.
For the enthusiast photographer, image quality is the prime consideration when choosing a DSLR, and the D7000 provides the best high ISO performance in this category of DSLRs, making it perfect for low light shooting.
The Nikon D7000 should be yet another great enthusiast DSLR. It is fast, produces excellent image quality in good and low light, and is the most advanced DSLR in its category.
