High Sensitivity CMOS sensor improves low light photography. The Canon PowerShot SD4000 IS / IXUS 300 HS features 10MP resolution (1/2.3-in. Backlit CMOS), 3.8x ultra wide-angle optical zoom (28-105mm equiv.), built-in optical image stabilization, and a 7.6-cm (3.0-in.) LCD display screen (230-k dot).

The 3.8x wide-angle optical zoom is great for capturing sweeping landscapes, wide interior shots, and large family gathering shots. The medium telephoto is perfect for portraits. Optical Image Stabilization helps reduce camera shake and avoid blurred photos at the maximum focal length or in challenging low lighting conditions.

For general purpose photography, the beginner photogrpaher can use Smart AUTO and Scene modes to automatically select the appropriate settings. For those who desire a bit more control, switch to Program AE (P) mode, Aperture-Priority mode or Shutter-Priority mode. Dial in an exposure compensation to compensate for scenes that are too bright or too dark. Custom White Balance allows you to obtain the correct colors under artificial lighting situations.

The new Backlit CMOS sensor, the HS (High Sensitivity) technology, fast F2.0 lens (at wide-angle) and optical image stabilization together allow for sharper images with less noise when taking pictures in low light situations. ISO ranges from 125 to 3200; Low Light mode extends that from ISO of 400 to 6400.

The PowerShot SD4000 IS has two new features for high speed photography: the Super Slow Motion movie function shoots movies at very high speed (240fps) and then plays them back at normal speed (30fps) for super slow motion video; the High-Speed Burst mode captures fast action still shots at 8.4fps. These new features allow for a variety of viewing options, including creating the perfect highlight reel of your kid’s best sports plays, or a playback option to check out your golf swing in full detail.

The Canon PowerShot SD4000 IS captures HD 720p movies (1280 x 720 pixels) with stereo sound. You can watch HD movies (and still photos) on your HDTV with a mini-HDMI connector for direct connection to a high definition TV monitor.

Creative effects include Fisheye Effect that uses barrel distortion to warp the image around the center, giving a distinctive curvature effect to the photo; and Miniature Effect that creates an illusion where very large objects appear in miniature proportions.

Other creative effects include Color Swap and Color Accent (retain a single color in your image while other colors turn monochrome). Smart Shutter technology automatically takes pictures when a person smiles or winks, resulting in less re-takes. The SD4000 IS accepts the Eye-Fi memory card that will wirelessly transfer your pictures to your PC.

The Canon PowerShot SD4000 IS is ideal for those desiring an ultra compact and easy-to-use point-and-shoot digital camera for low light indoors photography. It comes in Black, Red or Silver, priced at about US $350 (CAD $400).
