Step 1:
Your Requirements

Many beginners read and read and read -- and end up knowing a lot about digital cameras -- but nothing about what they want from a digital camera. The result is information overload and a confused buyer.

The first step is, therefore, to decide what you want from a digital camera: your requirements. To help you in this process, we have devised a QuickProfile™ Sheet:

QuickProfile™ Sheet
1. What kind of photographer am I?
Point-and-Shoot ("I shoot, the camera does the rest")
Beginner ("I'm not sure but I may want to learn more")
Serious ("I want to learn and grow in digital photography")
Advanced amateur photographer ("The camera is a tool")
2. Is it essential to have the highest image quality?
No, as long as it does not noticeably look bad
High enough to be able to print quality 8x10 in.
Yes, I am producing these for my clients
3. Decide what you want to use it primarily for.
Upload to the Internet
Email to family and friends
Print up to 4x6 in. photos
Print up to 8x10 in. photos
Macro photography (close ups)
Underwater photography
Action photography
Group shots
Night time photography
Primarily indoor (artificial light) photography
4. Decide how much you can afford, for now.
I just want to start and try and see if I like it
As long as it's the best value for what I'm getting
I can afford it at any price

Once you have answered these questions (including those criteria you have added to the list), you are now ready to make a shortlist of candidates that meet your requirements.
