Jeff Wignall over at Black Star Rising has an interesting article about the disappearance of the classic neon signs and its replacement with uninspiring fluorescent signs.

Neon signs are made of tubing that is bent into letters and shapes. Fluorescent signs are translucent drawings with a fluorescent lamp lighting it from behind.
