2nd Annual Experience Canadian Heritage Rivers Photo Contest

To celebrate Canada’s Heritage Sites, Canoeroots & Family Camping magazine are running a photo contest. Take a picture of one of Canada’s 42 Heritage Rivers and you might win a prize.

Send us your images of any of the 42 rivers in the Canadian Heritage Rivers System: photos of families, nature, cities and adventure. Enter in any of the four categories and you could win great prizes.

Contest runs from May 15, 2012 to October 31, 2012.

Before you enter the contest, we encourage you to read the rules carefully, especially pertaining the rights to your submitted pictures.

Here are the obligatory copyrights section:

Copyright Notice

With respect to any photo entered in this contest, each Participant, or the copyright holder for these photos, would retain the copyright. By uploading or entering a photo in the contest, the Participants agree to grant (or certify that the photo’s copyright holder expressly grants) to Rapid Magazine Inc., the Parks Canada Agency and the member agencies of the Canadian Heritage Rivers Board of the CHRS a world-wide, royalty-free, irrevocable and non-exclusive right and license to use, copy, adapt, transmit, communicate, publish, publicly display and distribute, as well as create and distribute compilations and derivative works or merchandise from any such submitted photos to promote the contest or any resulting public display. The Participants will further grant to Parks Canada Agency and Rapid Magazine Inc. the right to archive the submitted photos and to use them as part of educational or business activities. The Participants will finally represent and warrant that they have the right to grant the license set out above.

Where individuals appear in the photos, the Participants shall obtain in writing from these individuals, or from the parent or guardian, in the case of a minor child, permission to reprint, publish or reproduce the images, as described above.

A word of caution concerning the copyrights: though you retain the copyright to your pictures, you grant the sponsors the rights to do whatever they want with it for ever, without a cent of remuneration to you. This effectively amounts to a rights grab and all submitted pictures (whether they win a prize or not) are affected. So think hard whether the prizes are worth it.

We encourage the sponsors to change the copyrights wording to restrict the use of the pictures to promote the contest only and for a period of only 1 year. After that time, any use of the pictures will need your approval and be remunerated. That’s fair.
