Black Water Bird Sports Camera

Thu November 15, 2012

A cormorant picked up more than it bargained for when it found a strange object in a lake. It probably thought it was a fish but it turned out to be Frank Resendes’s camera that slipped out of his pocket during a fishing trip while he was helping haul in a fish near Craven, Saskatchewan around March. Months later, Karen Gwillim was driving by the small town near Regina when she saw a cormorant staring at her with something strapped around its long neck. She pulled over, approached the water bird, and removed the silver camera. The bird did not offer any resistance and, freed from its load, happily flew away.

Gwillim posted some of the 239 photos in a public Facebook album on Oct. 30, but it was an interview by the local CBC radio station and a publihed story online that alerted Frank Resendes as to the whereabouts of his camera.

‘McAfee All Access 2013’: An Enhanced Cross-Device Security Product for PCs, Macs, & Android-Based Phones & Tablets

Wed November 14, 2012

This video presents “McAfee All Access 2013: Antivirus protection for all of your devices”:

  • “McAfee All Access delivers top-of-the-line security protection for all of your Internet-connected devices, such as tablets, smartphones, laptops, desktops, even MACs
  • All it takes is this one software application and you can easily protect important data on all of your mobile electronics”

McAfee today has announced the release of McAfee All Access 2013, an enhanced cross-device security product for PCs, Macs, and Android-based phones and tablets. It provides users with a comprehensive means of protection against a rapidly evolving threat landscape, and gives them the ability to monitor and manage system security for all of their devices from one central location.

Earlier this morning, McAfee Labs released McAfee Threats Report: Third Quarter 2012. Findings showed that mobile malware almost doubled the previous quarter’s total, ransomware has grown by 43 per cent, and Web threats have increased by 20 per cent. Cybercrime is showing no signs of slowing down and is in fact getting increasingly sophisticated and dangerous.

As consumers begin thinking about their holiday shopping, many of them will fire up their devices to go online, order gifts, plan travel, and catch up with friends and family. And in tandem with this uptick in online and mobile shopping is the number of online scams and malware designed to steal personal information. It cannot be stressed enough that all consumers need to be diligent about protecting their Internet-connected devices and personal data, especially as the threat landscape continues to evolve.

Here is an infographic that illustrates Canadian online/mobile surfing habits and concerns:

McAfee Threats Report Shows Global Expansion of Cybercrime

Report Reveals Further Details of “Operation High Roller,” Explores Evolution of Ransomware, Shows Malware Topping 100 Million Samples, and Finds Database Breaches at All-Time High

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – November 14, 2012 – McAfee today released the McAfee Threats Report: Third Quarter 2012, which explores techniques in cybercrime as well as the global evolution of cyber exploits. The latest report uncovers new details of “Operation High Roller,” tracks that mobile malware almost doubled the previous quarter’s total, and reveals an all-time high in database breaches.  McAfee Labs also saw jumps in some categories of malware, including ransomware and signed binaries. Rootkits and Mac malware continue to rise, while password-stealing Trojans and AutoRun malware also trended strongly upward.

“Cybercrime exhibits few signs of slowing down,” said Vincent Weafer, Senior Vice President of McAfee Labs. “Though we tend to highlight the numbers, the fact is that we continue to see increased sophistication of attacks. Cybercrime, hacktivism, and cyberwarfare are in a continual state of evolution. Everyone from governments to large enterprises, small business and home users are facing a wider range of digital threats from these forces, as they gain more actionable intelligence on their victims, and leverage the newest attack platforms and exploits tools to launch their campaigns. We all need to equip ourselves with basic situation awareness to our online risks and how best to prevent and combat these threats.”

Greg’s Drop-Motion Animation

Tue November 13, 2012

Greg Condon appears into and disappears out of his clothes at the drop of a camera click. One moment he’s here and the next, he’s gone, sort of à-la-Time Traveller’s Wifey thing. It’s all timed perfectly and it’s outrageously entertaining.

Our Featured Site is the beautiful photography (yes, it’s photography, not Photoshoppy) of Jay Mark Johnson using a slit camera. It reverses everything: moving subjects are caught as though stationary and stationary objects are blurred.

Apparently, a similar slit-scan technique is used to make the stretch effect of the Start Trek Enterprise going to warp speed.
