Eco Art National Youth Photo Contest

Fri September 30, 2011

If you fancy having your art exhibited on 8′ x 8′ (about 2.4 m x 2.4 m) panels on the Rideau Canal Skateway during the 2012 skating season, then enter the “Eco Art National Youth Photo Contest” (warning: read the License before you do). It’s open to young Canadian photographers and the photos must have an environmental theme. Be creative, be original and your photo could be one of 40 to be displayed to hundreds of thousands of visitors during Winterlude, Canada’s winter celebration.

We’re looking for young Canadian photographers who have something to say about the environment. Grab your camera and show us your creative and original views on the environment. Your photo could be exhibited in popular places in Ottawa–Gatineau!

Deadline: October 31, 2011 at midnight E.S.T.

There are also Nikon DSLRs to be won! The top three winning photos will each win prizes courtesy of Henry’s Canada:

Canon SX40 HS Review @ DigitalCameraInfo

Fri September 30, 2011

Canon PowerShot SX40 HS

Canon PowerShot SX40 HS

The Canon PowerShot SX40 HS retains everything we loved about its predecessor, while boosting image quality to levels we’ve not yet seen from a fixed-lens camera.

We’ve added another Canon SX40 HS [QuickPrice Check] Review to our Reviews Matrix.

DigitalCameraInfo has posted their review of the Canon PowerShot SX40 HS, an ultra zoom digital camera with 12.1MP resolution (1/2.3-in. CMOS), a whooping 35x ultra wide-angle optical zoom (24-840mm equiv.), optical image stabilization, Zoom Framing Assist, 2.7-in. Vari-Angle LCD (230k-dot), EVF, Smart AUTO, PASM modes, Scene Modes, Continuous Shooting 8 shots @ 10.3fps, Super Slow Motion Movie (240fps), Color Accent, and Full HD movie (1920 x 1080) @ 24fps. Both the optical image stabilizer and optical zoom are available during movie shooting.

You can read the Canon SX40 HS Review @ DigitalCameraInfo.

UT Scientists Discovery: Antartica Once Had Forests, Plants, Animals, Insects

Fri September 30, 2011

Antartica © Peter Flaig

Antartica © Peter Flaig

Antartica is a hidden world for most of us since it is such a forbidding place with temperatures reaching a low of −89 °C (−129 °F). It is on average the coldest, driest, and windiest continent and is considered a desert iceland.

Yet, University of Texas at Austin geologists have found traces that point to Antartica once being much warmer and harboring animal and plant life.

University of Texas at Austin geologist Peter Flaig of the Jackson School of Geosciences went to Antarctica in search of fossils. Surrounded by snow and ice, he and his colleagues discovered the footprints of horseshoe crabs, burrows of small mammal-like reptiles and the remains of forests, all signs of a much warmer time millions of years ago.

Kindle Lights A Fire Under the iPad

Wed September 28, 2011

From kindle

Amazon is accepting pre-order of its new Kindle Fire [QuickPrice Check], a 7-inch full-color Multi-touch tablet with Wi-Fi. The Kindle Fire will be released on November 15, 2011 and will for now ship from and sold by Amazon Digital Services, U.S. only.

I don’t know if it’s the slick marketing or simply the Amazon Kindle name, but it looks like a winner already — and I bet Apple will regret it did not introduce a 7-in. iPad first. No doubt, one will be forthcoming at a matching price.

Unlike the original Kindle which was basically an e-Reader, the new Kindle Fire plays movies, apps, games, music, reading and Amazon’s new cloud-accelerated web browser. Regretably, there’s no camera.

Here are the main features:

  • 18 million movies, TV shows, songs, magazines, and books
  • Amazon Appstore – thousands of popular apps and games
  • Ultra-fast web browsing – Amazon Silk
  • Free cloud storage for all your Amazon content
  • Vibrant color touchscreen with extra-wide viewing angle
  • Fast, powerful dual-core processor
  • Amazon Prime members enjoy unlimited, instant streaming of over 10,000 popular movies and TV shows

Pre-order the Amazon Kindle Fire [QuickPrice Check] now.

SeaLife Announces Launch of First Ever High-Def Underwater Camera

SeaLife introduces a first of its kind – an underwater HD video camera with the longest battery life of any model

Tequesta, Florida (PRWEB) September 28, 2011

Underwater Cameras Direct brings aboard to its fine line of underwater cameras the new SeaLife DC 1400, with its 720p video or 14 megapixel high resolution capability. SeaLife, the leader in underwater cameras, built the new DC 1400 to be easy to use for creating your own personal undersea concerto of sight and sound.

Boasting five easy-to-use “piano keys”, the DC 1400 allows you to take either true high-definition 720p video or 14 megapixel high-resolution images of your adventures beneath the seas and above water as well. These five large primary control keys eliminate the confusing button cluster of a traditional camera to provide simple one-handed operation in any environment.

Photographers: How To Get Paid

Wed September 28, 2011

Brandon Cotter has written a series of articles over at Black Star on how to bill clients and make sure they pay you for services rendered. It’s not easy sometimes to go after a customer, especially if it’s a big one, that drags its feet to pay you.

In Memoriam: WTC by Photographers

Wed September 28, 2011

Ground Zero par ceux qui l’ont photographié from Polka Image on Vimeo.

We’ve seen lots of photos and videos of the 9/11 WTC events and read too much already. But when I saw this video, I felt it was different, seen through the eyes of some of the people, like you and I, but who just happened to be there and had a camera with them. Photographing the events of 9/11 leaves a lasting mark on you and had me thinking back to that day 10 years ago: What if I were there with my camera and had snapped those shots? How would I have felt and how would it have changed me? Robert Clark, Klaus Reisinger, Ethan Levitas et Jean-Michel Turpin were there and they share what they experienced and felt as their cameras captured the events.

Robert Clark, Klaus Reisinger, Ethan Levitas et Jean-Michel Turpin ont vécu les attaques du 11-septembre et leurs conséquences de manières différentes. Ils nous font part de leur expérience en mots et en images.
