The Canon PowerShot SX230 HS [QuickPrice Check] and the Nikon COOLPIX S9100 [QuickPrice Check] made it to the very top, each earning a Gold Award. This marks a remarkable comeback for Nikon which seems to want to reclaim the top spots in the compact consumer categories once again.

Sayonara DSLR, Hello CSC?

Wed July 20, 2011

Very interesting — and may I say, also very well written and dispassionately argued — article over at DPNow on whether the days of the mirrored DSLR are numbered. It also examines if the future for system cameras is mirrorless.

Hubble Discovers A New (4th) Moon Circling Not-A-Planet Pluto

Wed July 20, 2011

Pluto's 4th Moon, P4 - Image courtesy NASA

I was pretty miffed when some hotshot astronomers decided to downgrade Pluto from a bona fide planet to a not-a-planet-but-we’ll-call-it-a-dwarf-planet-so-as-not-to-miff-people. Just so you know, I and all other seven members in SP3 (the Society for the Preservation of Pluto as a Planet) are still miffed. Now, they tell us they have “discovered” (why do we still use those derogatory terms) a new moon, the 4th one (and dubbed P4 for now), circling not-a-planet Pluto. Just wait until they discover signs of life on Pluto, that’ll show the punks! ;)

Oh, they discovered P4 while trying to “discover” rings around Pluto. ;)

Leica Noctilux-M f/0.95 Lens Review @BJP

Wed July 20, 2011

Leica Noctilux-M 50mm f/0.95 ASPH

Leica Noctilux-M 50mm f/0.95 ASPH

Dubbed the “Light of the Night,” the Leica Noctilux-M 50mm f/0.95 ASPH lens allows you to shoot in low light as no other lens does and is currently the fastest lens available on the market for a full-frame camera. At this large aperture, the bokeh is simply amazing. Some photographers even claim it gives a 3D quality to their pictures.

To get one, you’ll have to patiently take your place in the year-long waiting line and be ready to fork out a little over US $12K. Otherwise, you’re good to go and I would appreciate your ordering it via this Amazon.com link. Thank you! ;)

Leafcutter Ants To Humans: We Rule!

Wed July 20, 2011

We Rule from Catherine Chalmers on Vimeo.

Catherine Chalmers follows leafcutter ants and won a Guggenheim Fellowship for her project series in 2010.

We Rule is from “The Leafcutters” series – a project that includes video, photography, drawing and sculpture. It was shot in Panama.

At one point, we see a grasshopper and the “La cigale et la fourmi” came to mind. On another scene, an ant is dragging a spent [probably] dandelion seed and I can hear [in my head] the other ants shouting at him, “Leaf. We want leaf.” My active imagination can also picture these ants dinosaur-size cutting huge swaths of limestone out of mountain sides and buiilding, what, the pyramid?

Recommend you watch this delightful video to the end (or skip to the 2:18 mark) for the grand finale ending complete with eerily sound effects by Charles Lindsay. Mmmmm, me think those ants may have gotten some help in cutting those suspiciously-looking alphabet shapes.

You can view more videos at: Catherine Chalmers and on her Vimeo page.
