Apple iPhone to Autofix Tilt and Perspective Distortion

Fri June 24, 2011

Apple iPhone patent: fixes perspective

Apple iPhone patent: fixes perspective

Now, here is a really useful firmware feature that should instantly make many of us better photographers. I am always getting my horizontal and vertical lines tilted, yes even with the grid turned on! And I consider myself having a gentle shutter release that does not move the camera. However, I hope this feature can be turned OFF because otherwise, you’d never be able to take pictures with purposeful tilted verticals (for added compositional strength) — and also of the Tower of Pisa!

Firmware Updates

Fujifilm FinePix X100 Firmware Update Ver.1.10

Fri June 24, 2011

Fujifilm FinePix X100

Fujifilm FinePix X100

Fujifilm has delivered on its promise of over 20 firmware fixes for the Finepix X100 that should go a long way to placate many users that were won over by the camera’s image quality but irked by some of its behavior.

1. The following functions can be rocked during shooting by holding down [MENU / OK] button over 3 sec.
DRIVE / Flash / White balance / Macro (set on the Command Dial – 4 direction key)

2. “CORRECTED AF FRAME” menu is added in “SET-UP” menu (the last line on menu page 6) to display additional AF frame (corrected AF frame for reducing parallax) which can be effectively used for macro shots. (Factory default value is set to “OFF”)

3. Adjustment in1/3 step increment for shutter speed or aperture setting is enabled in Shutter-Priority AE and Aperture-Priority AE mode, on top of those in Manual Exposure mode.
Shutter-Priority AE : Adjustment is controlled by rotating the command dial
Aperture-Priority AE : Adjustment is controlled by moving left / right on the command control lever

Featured Site: Vivian Maier Self-Portraits

Vivian Maier is the nanny street photographer whose photos were discovered recently. Well, seems like she took quite a number of self-portraits, too.

So, take self-portraits for you may never know, you may become famous [or infamous] one day, too. Also, take pictures of where you live and especially how the people live because they will record a slice of history that will be too easily forgotten in future generations.

Johan’s Ark Takes Shape

Fri June 24, 2011

From mazlanzs

Johan Huibers, an expert builder, is attempting to build a full-scale replica of Noah’s ark complete with [plastic] animals. He’s been at it for the past three years in Dordrecht, Netherlands, carefully following the description in the Bible. After a nightmare that Holland suffers a great flood, he was inspired to prepare for that eventuality. Once completed, hopefully before the London Olympics, he plans to sail the ark up the Thames.

In the disaster movie 2012, the wealthy paid US $1B per person for a spot on such a gargantuan ark (built, in all places, in China). I wonder how much is a ticket to guarantee a spot on board Johan’s Ark?

Stuck in Airport? Hey, Let’s Make A Harold & Kumar Video!

Fri June 24, 2011

STUCK from Joe Ayala on Vimeo.

While on their way home from photographing Formula Drift Palm Beach, Larry Chen and Joe Ayala found themselves stranded overnight in Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) airport as their flights home were canceled. They reverted to horse play and made a Harold & Kumar-like video that went viral — much to the ire of the airport authorities [not really apparently]. After all, they raced in wheelchairs, made terrifying noises on the intercom, used equipment that were not theirs — for free, snuck into the kitchen galley, served themselves a cold refreshing drink, and did all kinds of shenanigans that would have driven a security guard bonkers.

But where were the security guards? They were there but turned a blind eye, recognizing it for what it was. Kudos to them and the DFW airport authorities for maturity and common sense, seemingly so lacking these days! In fact, I would suggest they hire these two to do a skit promo of the DFW airport: Look how much fun you could have there!
