University students at Penn State were given iPads for use in certain courses. They loved the form factor, touch screen and “magic” — but wouldn’t use it again for another course. As expected, creating documents on the iPad was “cumbersome.” Another major problem is Apple’s insistence that all information that is consumed has to go through its App Store; students cannot simply plug their iPads into the university’s network.

Still, educators hope that future tablets, be they iPads or another brand, will solve some of these difficulties and become more student-friendly. The educational sector is a huge untapped market that none of the tablet markers are appropriately targeting.
