Sat December 31, 2011

Olympus PEN E-P3

Olympus PEN E-P3

As successor to the E-P2, there are clearly a number of improvements visible, such as a very fast autofocus in the Olympus PEN E-P3, a more powerful processor, a new touch display with a larger viewing angle and a built-in flash has been added.

We’ve added another Olympus PEN E-P3 [QuickPrice Check] review to our Reviews Matrix.

LetsGoDigital has published their review of the Olympus E-P3, a Digital Interchangeable Lens Compact System Camera with 12.3MP resolution (on a 17.3 x 13.0 mm High Speed Live MOS Sensor), Sensor-shift Image Stabilization, Dust Reduction, an extra large 3.0-in. LCD (614k-dot), Full HD Movie (1920×1080/60i) with stereo sound, Intelligent AUTO (auto scene recognition), Scene Modes, AF Tracking, Face Detection, Shadow Adjustment Technology, PASM modes, Shutter speed range of 60 – 1/4000 sec. plus Bulb (up to 30 mins), Continuous Shooting at 5.5fps, RAW file format, Digital Level, MF Assist, a hot shoe, Live View Autofocus system with real time focus, Multiple Exposure, Wireless compatibility (using optional PP-1 Penpal or Eye-Fi card), and Art Filters.

This Week’s (Dec 24-30, 2011) Digital Camera Review Roundup

Sat December 31, 2011

Here is this week’s (Dec 24-30, 2011) digital camera review roundup:

  • LetsGoDigital finds the Olympus PEN E-PM1 [QuickPrice Check]is ideal for people that truly value good quality photos and video recordings, but find a digital SLR camera much too heavy and complicated.
  • DigitalCameraReview loves the Pentax Q [QuickPrice Check] and sees “the market for the "Q" as shooters who like really tiny cameras and available light/natural light aficionados and/or street shooters who like the fast f/1.9 "normal" lens.
  • PhotographyBLOG recommends the Samsung ST96 as “an inexpensive yet at the same time reasonably built pocket snapper, which delivers fuss free results at an inexpensive price point.
  • LetsGoDigital finds that the Olympus E-PL3 [QuickPrice Check]has similar image quality to a comparable SLR camera, especially for the lower ISO values.
  • BobAtkinsneeded a new P&S camera for those times when all I can carry is something that will fit in my pocket” and found that the Samsung HZ30W / WB600 [QuickPrice Check]meets my requirements for manual control, long shutter speeds, optical stabilization and has a pretty good Schneider-Kreuznach 3.9-58.5/3.2-5.8 lens (24-360mm 35mm equivalent).

The 2011 Photography LuLa Awards

Fri December 30, 2011

OK, we’ll bite and play along. Luminous Landscape (“LuLa”) has compiled a list of the epic “Fails of the Year” honoring “those companies, products and people in the photographic industry who simply blew it during the past twelve months. All it takes to be the winner of a LuLa is to do something really dumb.

In this their first annual LuLa awards, they single out five companies that have misread their customers’ willingness to part with hard-earned money, scammed shareholders to the tune of $1.7B, locked customers into proprietary systems, alienated customers with stupid upgrade policies (just waiting for a competitor to move in), and displayed arrogance by cutting off loyal customers. Yep, any of these moves should earn you a prestigious LuLa Award.

They did not have one, so we took the liberty of quickly mocking one up, the LuLa Awards logo, that is. I’m sure they’ll have one officially designed when this awards gets the traction it deserves.

Should Street Photography Be Outlawed?

Thu December 29, 2011

David Saxe has an interesting article over at BlackStar on whether Street Photography should be protected for the photographer as a right to photograph people in public places — or whether it is “rude and offensive to photograph a subject when they are unaware and without permission. [...] I even get the impression that they would like laws passed to enforce this notion.

In this social age where privacy is being trampled right and left, we understand the desire to protect our privacy, but banning or outlawing street photography is not the way to go. David Saxe explores what a world without street photography would be like.
