Inter // States – Tokyo by Night Time Lapse

Fri September 17, 2010

inter // states from Samuel Cockedey on Vimeo.

Tokyo is one of the three command centers of the world economy, with London and New York being the other two. With a population of more than 35 million people, it is also one of the world’s most populous metropolitan area with the world’s largest metropolitan economy.

How do you do a time lapse? Season9 has an interview with Samuel Cockedey on how he approaches his time lapse photography. I like his answer about how you really get to visit a place when you stay there for hours shooting a time lapse. When asked what improvements he would like to see in digital cameras to facilitate taking time lapse, he answers:

It’d be nice to have smaller and lighter pro-grade DSLRs. Progress has been made in terms of dust spots removal but that still remains an issue when working in the field with full frame sensors. Dust spots can be a real problem when working on series of hundred or thousands of images because batch correction doesn’t always produce good results. Higher dynamic ranges would also be nice, or at least the possibility to shoot HDR-type pictures directly in camera without the need to process several versions of the same picture in post. It’d be great to have some kind of in-camera software ND grad filters too.

Camera manufacturers, take note!

‘Minority Report’ Hand Tracking Interface Closer To Reality

Thu September 16, 2010

From rkeltset

Hand-tracking interface is making progress and I will not be surprised to see it in commercial applications (probably in video games first) in the near future. The above intro video takes a tongue-in-cheek look at some “practical” applications.

There have been a number of prototypes from different research scientists and the “colored glove” seems to be the most successful to date. The video below (which we showed before) demonstrates the real possibility of a “Minority Report” gesture interface.

From rkeltset

So far, a pair of these gesture tracking gloves ranges from about $1,300 all the way up to $40,000 for a high end system with force feedback. As the cost of these gloves and associated software fall in price, their adoption into commercial products will be accelerated.

The Dark Flash Camera

Wed September 15, 2010

In some venues, flash photography is not allowed, making available low light photography impossible unless you own one of those low noise high resolution digital SLR. Computer scientist Rob Fergus thinks he may have found the answer with a “dark flash” — a flash that emits IR and UV light, light outside the visible spectrum.

To use a dark-flash camera, you basically take two photos of the same scene in quick succession: one photo in ambient light (regardless of how dark the environment is) and one in the ultraviolet and infrared light provided by the dark flash. You then merge the best characteristics of each photo in post processing. It is conceivably possible to do this processing in-camera in the future.

Combining pictures taken this way actually produces a high enough quality picture though with the colors a bit off and some details missing.
