Samsung NX10

Samsung NX10

The results from the NX10 are clearly a step above the MFT cameras.

We’ve added a new Samsung NX10 [Specs] Review to our Reviews Matrix.

Understanding Exposure – Aperture

Thu March 11, 2010

As some of you know, I am going through Bryan Petersen’s excellent book, Understanding Exposure, on Photoxels on Facebook and adding my comments to each chapter. I learned a lot from that book and heartily recommend it to anyone who wants to learn and improve their photography. After a long hiatus, I’ve now just posted my discussion on the “Aperture” chapters.

Ricoh Should Rethink the GXR Concept

Thu March 11, 2010

Ricoh GXR

Ricoh GXR

At CP+, Ricoh is showing its GXR Interchangeable Unit concept and also a couple of weird units, the first with a Leica lens and external optical viewfinder attached (no hint of interchangeability since we don’t see a lens mount) and a second one with a unit attached to the back of a Hasselblad.

It seems more to us that these look like a DIY that a fan might do to a unit once it becomes obsolete.

After seeing the unit with the Leica lens attached, it seems to us that a rethink of the GXR concept may be in order. Instead of units with non-interchangeable lenses, Ricoh should create units with different lens mount, one with a Nikon lens mount, one with a Canon lens mount, one with a 4/3 lens mount, etc. Now, that would be different and probably sell like hot cakes. You read it here first!

Wildlife Photographer of the Year Disses Cameras With Less Than 10MP

Thu March 11, 2010

The prestigious Veolia Environnement Wildlife Photographer of the Year photo competition seems to court controversies. After disqualifing the 2009 winning entry of the photographer José Luis Rodríguez, The Storybook Wolf, it is now explaning itself on another controversy. A new rule states that it will not allow pictures taken on digital cameras with less than 10MP.

The reasoning behind the rule change is that winning entries need to be printed mega museum large scale and pictures with less than 10MP just don’t cut it. [Ever thought of displaying digital images on digital screens?] So, beware photographers and camera manufacturers, maybe we need a new “Approved by VEWPOTY” decal on new cameras with 10+MP.

There you go! If ever you needed a valid reason to convince yourself or your significant other on the dire need to upgrade to the newest digital camera, just remember that you may win at the Veolia Environnement Wildlife Photographer of the Year photo competition and you wouldn’t want your winning entry to get disqualified because of a shortage of megapixels now, would you?

Being a Mentor

Thu March 11, 2010

There is probably nothing more satisfying in life [as one grows older, I must add] than to be able to mentor a younger person willing to learn. Seven photographers look back at how their mentors have helped them succeed and what makes a good mentor.

Copying Others’ Work For Your Own Conceptual Work?

Thu March 11, 2010

Never heard of this before but an artist displaying her work at the Whitney Museum of Art’s Biennial exhibition used work from other photographers without their permission under the guise of being a conceptual artist. Apparently the Museum thinks this is also all right because they have not removed the offending exhibit.
