Hand Inspection of High-Speed Film Recommended; Digital Media Safe in Transit
Wakefield, Mass. December 14, 2009 — Air travelers will again encounter strict enforcement of regulations on flying with lithium batteries this holiday season, according to the International Imaging Industry Association (I3A; http://www.i3a.org), the leading global association for the imaging industry.
Loose lithium batteries – both the primary lithium digital camera batteries and the lithium-ion types that power laptop computers, plus some AA batteries — have been prohibited in U.S. checked baggage since January 1, 2008 due to their extreme flammability; elsewhere in the world, regulations may be even more stringent. I3A recommends transporting any spare lithium batteries in carry-on baggage only, for safety’s sake and to avoid possible confiscation of items from checked baggage. Additional pointers and information can be found on the U.S. Transportation Security Administration’s (TSA) Web site, http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/assistant/batteries.shtm.

Leica M9
“But I’m going to be a bit of an iconoclast and propose that the M9 is in fact an ideal landscape camera in many situations.”
Luminous Landscape has published a very interesting “Landscape Experiment” using the Leica M9 for landscape photography. The Leica M9 [Specs] is a full-frame (36 x 24mm) digital rangefinder camera with 18MP resolution, no anti-alias filter, a new thicker UV/IR filter in front of the sensor, ISO 160-2500, continuous shooting 2fps, 2.5-in. (230K dots) LCD, RAW.

Most beginner photographers rate a digital camera by scrutinizing a picture taken by the camera to see how sharp it is. Sharpness is prized for good reasons and yet it is often important to be able to throw the background out of focus to get maximum impact from a photograph. We do that by using a shallow deapth-of-field.
Shelton Muller of Total Image magazine (www.total-image.com.au) explains depth-of-field and demonstrates how to use depth-of-field to your advantage when taking portraits.

Ricoh GXR
“The Ricoh GXR is one of the most photographer-friendly cameras that we’ve ever reviewed.”
PhotographyBLOG has posted their review of the Ricoh GXR, an “interchangeable unit camera system” that swaps both the lens and associated image sensor as an integrated unit. Currently, there are two units available: the A12 has a 50mm F2.5 Macro lens with a 12.3M (23.6 x 15.7mm) CMOS sensor; the S10 has a 24-72mm F2.5-4.4 lens with a 10M (1/1.7-in.) CCD sensor. The camera has a 3.0-in. high resolution (920,000 dots) LCD.
